strange cities
Athens , 2016
For this exhibition, curated by Double Decker in collaboration with the Onassis Cultural Centre, artists from around the world were invited to create images of Athens on one condition: that they had never actually visited the city. Participating artists were provided with an ‘inspiration box’ containing a poem, a recipe, a scent, a book, the music and sounds of Athens, but no visual references. The exhibition was staged in a semi-derelict landmark in downtown Athens, rarely visited even by locals. In designing the exhibition, we recreated this sense of dislocation from reality by setting up a series of parallel universes. Each artist’s work was surrounded by transparent screens, opaque curtains, or layered frames designed to shift your perspective — subtle filters that put the viewer in the same mind-set as the artist.
